Pumpkin Update for End of June
Brynn tends to the raised bed. Tomato plants to the left with new Atlantic Giant Pumpkins planted throughout the rest of the bed.
Our backyard pumpkin patch is coming to life, and the first signs of the season's promise are starting to show. The warm sun has been relentless this past week, but the heat seems to have given the pumpkins exactly what they needed to kick into gear. Vines have stretched out across the soil, their broad leaves casting patchy shade, and tiny green globes are beginning to form along the stems. There's a quiet kind of excitement in seeing them take shape—especially Otto’s pumpkins, which are already standing out with their sturdy growth.
Bed Number One - This bed consists of the Grizzly Bear pumpkins.
What is a grizzly bear pumpkin?
A small round warted pumpkin with light brown color and heavy warts that are hard and will not damage easily. Strong vines offer intermediate resistance to Powdery Mildew. A great addition to your fall display.
Bed Number Two: Scarface Pumpkins
A Scarface pumpkin is a type of warted pumpkin known for its distinctive, ghoulish appearance and durable handle. It is a hybrid variety from the Super Freak series, popular for fall displays and roadside sales. Scarface pumpkins are characterized by their upright shape, orange rind, and mature, hardened warts.
Though the plants haven't flowered yet, the signs are unmistakable: we're in for a strong harvest. The vines are thick and healthy, reaching out in every direction, as if claiming their place in the yard. Each morning brings something new—another curl of tendril, another bulge in the soil where a pumpkin is pushing its way into the world. Otto’s enthusiasm is infectious, and he’s already eyeing the biggest ones like a proud farmer sizing up his crop.
Scarface Pumpkins - This is what we are hoping for!
With the soil still holding warmth from the long, hot days, we’re hopeful the flowers will follow soon. For now, it’s all about watching and waiting, tending and watering, and letting the patch do what it does best—transforming sunlight, water, and a bit of patience into something magical.
